As we grow old we tend to become set in our ways. We have views on life and ideas of the world and how we fit in. As children, though, things are exciting and new - we’re open minded and experience each moment with pure emotion and no pretenses. Inevitably we grow up and learn to survive by protecting the mind and hardening the heart. Life becomes safe, predictable, and we keep to known patterns and experiences. We do this and become the person we think we should be but in the process we lose the childlike innocence within. Life Anthems is the sound of breaking down those barriers and seeking freedom from being cold, distant, and comfortably numb.

Gentleforce’s Eli Murray says “Life Anthems was born without any intentional outcome - the music just took over my life and happened quite suddenly in March 2023, a snapshot of life right now and how I feel connected to nature and family. This music was built around meditative loops and field recordings I made on the go whilst with friends or family. I kept the creation process intentionally simple and always chased a childlike mindset when in that creative zone. Think of these tracks as little sonic polaroids, a snapshot of deep connection to nature and family.”

Gentleforce is the ambient solo project of Sydney-based sound artist Eli Murray, which explores psychogeography and its interaction between the natural environment, spatial histories and the emotional impact these have on the individual. With a focus on creating positive, healing sound environments, Murray fuses field recordings, meditative synth music, and decades of experience as a club DJ with a love of traditional ceremonial music from around the world. Murray’s work has been featured by Underbelly Arts, Vivid Sydney, and the Australian Ballet, shortlisted for the Australian Music Prize, and used in documentaries and film on the ABC and SBS networks.

Gentleforce and Oxtail Recordings would like to acknowledge the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation as the traditional custodians of the land these recordings were made upon. We recognise their continuing connection to the land and waters, and thank them for protecting this coastline, the bush and its ecosystems since time immemorial.

I stumbled upon Gentleforce via a link from Tim Ritchie & Kinderling radio, I've been listening to a lot drone, ambient field recordings, head music & this particular album has everything needed for a sonic journey & a good lie down. Which I believe Eli Murray intended, it's great to hear a Sydney based artist exploring new territory. DJHDD
