Dave Doyen’s been making appearances on Oxtail for years, both solo and collaboratively, but it took until now for us to release a proper full-length statement of his. Picking up where his previous projects Sound Out Light and Vales left off, here he debuts the Wide Color moniker, coming correct with an appropriately broad palette of kosmische sound. The album’s opening one-two stakes out the extremes of the project: “Bough” is all gauzy ambience, an absolute stunner which wastes no time careening headfirst into the industrial gurgle of “Practice Ceramics." He (mostly) paints inside the lines from there, dabbling in ambient, IDM, glitch, and drone, before ending with another curveball - an absolutely skull-rattling take on NEU!’s “Seeland.” Only someone with Doyen’s skill, resume, and winking sense of humor could pull it off so effortlessly.
