about
A head-spinning vision of a cybernetic future, Voltage Scores is the second full-length album by Brooklyn-based synthesist and educator Matthew Ryals for Oxtail Recordings. This time around, he brought a free jazz mindset to the modular synthesizer and went deep, cultivating a daily practice over the course of more than a year, and a process that allowed these pieces to bloom in a focused yet free way.
The results - recorded live - combine generative patching with free improvisation and unfixed forms. Unusual yet organic shapes, shifting tempi, and percolating sequences all come together in a kaleidoscopic sound world where the only constant is change. All music on Voltage Scores was recorded live during these explorations (each track includes its take number in the title) - except for the euphoric album opener “suitcase with a mountain in it,” which features cellist Clarice Jensen (Bjork, Jóhann Jóhannsson, Max Richter).
